The Author,
Becky Kliss
I’m just a small-town girl, livin’ in an ever-changing world.
I took the midnight train to a lifelong love of all things Gen X, and I have an endless curiosity for culture, how it changes, and how it has changed us throughout the decades. Whether it is diving into communication styles, trends, social structures, societal issues, technology, or music (oh, yes, the music!), my love for the 80s goes beyond just nostalgia. I’m interested in what made Gen X (aka, “The Slackers,” “The Forgotten Generation,” “The Latchkey Kids”) into the resilient, self-starters we’ve become today.
I’m also a passionate environmentalist. A mixture of my overly persistent drive and my Gen X entrepreneurial talents led me to start a sustainable commercial cleaning company. Something that began with a bucket, a mop, a broom, and an idea grew to a staff of 180 employees across six counties for almost fifteen years. That led me to start a nonprofit in my community dedicated to helping businesses and schools recycle and improve their sustainable practices. Eventually, I opened Re-Imagine, a gallery that showcased and sold upcycled art, and held sustainable art workshops.
Three years ago, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming an author.
At 56, I’m the happiest and most content I’ve ever been. My never-ending curiosity has me reflecting on the lessons and divining the values that were instilled in us as Gen X. We’ve all learned a lot along the way, and it’s shaped us into who we are. This book is a testament to putting those lessons into practice. Since most of us are halfway there, (Whoa Oh, Livin’ on a Prayer), we know we have to fight for our right (to Parrrr-tay) and to live our best lives now.
